UGA Pathways Case Study

Student Affairs saw a 41% jump in attendance across 16 different events

April 29, 2024

In the fall of 2022, University of Georgia’s Welcome UGA program, which lives under their first year experience department, launched Penji Pathways. Pathways sent 16 different texts to 10,000 students at a time to increase FYE awareness. The results was UGA's has seen their most active welcome event series ever, with each event receiving between 30% and 50% higher attendance than they’d seen previously. They attribute this jump primarily to the SMS text messages sent via Pathways.

Massive impact on student engagement

avg. attendance increase for FYE events

Welcome UGA’s goal was to educate new freshmen on the opportunities available to them in their first semester. To do so, they sent a series of 16 “posts” (essentially emails and texts; see below) over a period of about one month. These included items like “Welcome to UGA!”, “Participate in ‘North of the Arch’”, “Attend Freshman Welcome”, and “Try a group fitness class”. You can view this 90-second demo for an example of the communication workflows Pathways enables.

We measured the effectiveness of this pilot by:

  1. Total Engagement
Tracking total engagement with any message (what percentage of students saw and interacted with these texts and emails?)
  2. Email vs. Text Engagement
Comparing email engagement to text message engagement by tracking link clicks (are texts really more effective than email?)
  3. Attendance at FYE Events
Comparing attendance at in-person FYE events with prior semesters (did Pathways contribute to a more engaged semester than usual?)

Results

This pilot exceeded UGA's expectations on all three measurables:

  1. Total Engagement
Over 90% of students engaged with a message in some way (opened or clicked); the average student engaged 10.1 times throughout this series
  2. Email vs. Text Engagement
Email and Text Message were nearly 50-50 in total clicks generated by each channel. Critically, the students clicking texts were substantially different than those opening the email. To be specific, there was a 50% increase in the students who engaged with the message due to having the text message. Further, Welcome UGA heard many qualitative stories from students appreciating the texts as a preferred communication channel
  3. Attendance at FYE Events
Perhaps the most important result, Welcome UGA saw considerably more active welcome month at their in-person events, with attendance between 30 and 50% higher across the board.

More Details on Penji Pathways

Penji Pathways allows admins to pre-schedule emails and text messages to specific segments of students on campus. It can be used by an unit, but commonly posed use cases are:

  • First Year Experience (FYE)
  • Advising
  • Honors programs
  • Grant-funded programs like TRiO
  • Any program with information, opportunities, or deadlines for students to keep up with

Below are the steps for using Pathways. Note that you can have many distinct units at your campus with their own portal and implementation of Pathways; this funnels into a unified dataset behind the scenes for the whole school.

Penji sets up an Community for a unit on campus (e.g. Welcome UGA)

  1. The admin can create what we call “Posts”, which consist of an SMS text or email and a “Post Details” page with expanded information
  2. The admin uploads student recipients for that post, which can be just a few or 10s of thousands (we sent to all 52,000 UGA students multiple times in this pilot)
  3. The communication goes out, including a standard link to the Post Details page where you have all of the information and “Actions ‘organized for the student.
